Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born in Paris France to British parents Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson who were both lawyers. When she was just five when she left for Oxfordshire and enrolled in her first Dragon School. Emma was only six when she realized she wanted to pursue a career as an actress. She studied for a number of years in Stagecoach Theatre Arts, a part time theatre school in Oxford in which she learned acting as well as singing. When she was ten, she had performed and taken the lead in various Stagecoach shows and school productions. Casting began in 1999 for Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone (2001) the film adaptation of British writer J.K. Rowling's bestselling novel. Emma was found by casting agents via Emma's Oxford theatre teacher. David Heyman told Emma along with Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe after having 8 consecutive auditions. The film's release Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) was Emma's first cinematic screen appearance. It set records in terms of opening day and weekend revenues, and was the top-grossing 2001 film. Film critics praised the film as well as the performances of the three young stars. The widely distributed British paper The Daily Telegraph called her performance admirable. Emma got five nominations in recognition of her impressive performance. In the end, she received the Young Artist Award in Leading Young Actress in an Film.
